About the Author
Arthur O'Sullivan is a professor of economics at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. After receiving his B.S. in economics at the University of Oregon, he spent two years in the Peace Corps, working with city planners in the Philippines. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University in 1981 and has taught at the University of California, Davis, and Oregon State University, winning several teaching awards at both schools. He recently accepted an endowed professorship at Lewis and Clark College, where he teaches microeconomics and urban economics. He is the author of the best-selling textbook, "Urban Economic"s, currently in its sixth edition. Professor O'Sullivan's research explores economic issues concerning urban land use, environmental protection, and public policy. His articles have appeared in many economics journals, including the" Journal of Urban Economics, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, National Tax Journal, Journal of Public Economics, "and" Journal of Law and Economics." Professor O'Sullivan lives with his family in Lake Oswego, Oregon. For recreation, he enjoys hiking, boogie-boarding, paragliding, and squash. Steven M. Sheffrin is dean of the division of social sciences and professor of economics at the University of California, Davis. He has been a visiting professor at Princeton University, Oxford University, and the London School of Economics and has served as a financial economist with the Office of Tax Analysis of the United States Department of Treasury. He has been on the faculty of the University of California, Davis, since 1976 and has served as the chairman of the department of economics. He received his B.A. fromWesleyan University and his Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Professor Sheffrin is the author of 10 other books and monographs and over 100 articles in the fields of macroeconomics, public finance, and international economics. His most recent books include "Rational Expectations" (second edition) and "Property Taxes and Tax Revolts: The Legacy of Proposition 13" (with Arthur O'Sullivan and Terri Sexton). Professor Sheffrin has taught macroeconomics at all levels, from large introduction to principles classes (enrollments of 400) to graduate classes for doctoral students. He is the recipient of the Thomas Mayer Distinguished Teaching Award in economics. He lives with his wife Anjali (also an economist) in Davis, California, and has two daughters who have studied economics. In addition to a passion for current affairs and travel, he plays a tough game of tennis. Stephen Perez is chair of the economics department at California State University, Sacramento. After receiving his B.A. in economics at the University of California, San Diego, he received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, Davis, in 1994. He taught economics at Virginia Commonwealth University and Washington State University before coming to California State University, Sacramento, in 2001. He teaches macroeconomics at all levels as well as econometrics, sports economics, labor economics, and mathematics for economists.
Professor Perez's research explores most macroeconomic topics. In particular, he is interested in evaluating the ability of econometric techniques to discover the truth, issues of causality in macroeconomics, and sports economics. His articles haveappeared in many economics journals, including the "Journal of Monetary Economics," "Econometrics Journal," "Economics Letters," "Journal of Economic Methodology," "Public Finance and Management," "Journal of Economics and Business," "Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics," "Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, Applied Economics," and "Journal of Macroeconomics."

Steven M. Sheffrin is a Professor of Economics and the Executive Director of the Murphy Institute at Tulane University. He is the author and co-author of several books, including Property Taxes and Tax Revolts (with Arthur O'Sullivan and Terri A. Sexton, Cambridge University Press, 2007) and Rational Expectations, 2nd edition (Cambridge University Press, 1996). His articles have appeared in numerous scholarly journals, including the American Economic Review, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Journal of Economic Perspectives, the Review of Economics and Statistics, the National Tax Journal, the Journal of International Economics, the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Monetary Economics, and the International Economic Review. He received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

About the Author
James S. Walker James Walker obtained his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the University of Washington in 1978. He subsequently served as a post-doc at the University of Pennsylvania, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of California at San Diego before joining the physics faculty at Washington State University in 1983. Professor Walker's research interests include statistical mechanics, critical phenomena, and chaos. His many publications on the application of renormalization-group theory to systems ranging from absorbed monolayers to binary-fluid mixtures have appeared in "Physical Review, Physical Review Letters, Physica," and a host of other publications. He has also participated in observations on the summit of Mauna Kea, looking for evidence of extra-solar planets. Jim Walker likes to work with students at all levels, from judging elementary school science fairs to writing research papers with graduate students, and has taught introductory physics for many years. His enjoyment of this course and his empathy for students have earned him a reputation as an innovative, enthusiastic, and effective teacher. Jim's educational publications include "Reappearing Phases" ("Scientific American, "May 1987) as well as articles in the "American Journal of Physics "and "The Physics Teacher," In recognition of his contributions to the teaching of physics, Jim was named Boeing Distinguished Professor of Science and Mathematics Education for 2001-2003. Good book to start practicing translations FR-EN. A bit old now, but it is still good.

I used this text in a translation class (French-English), and found it easy to teach with, and for the students to understand translation theory (e. g. the seven translation processes, faux amis, etc.). The theory is based on Vinay & Darbelnet's Comparative Stylistics (1958). Each chapter covers one translation process, with numerous examples in both languages, and a series of application exercises. In my opinion, it is currently the best manual for an introductory translation course.

This book is excellent. It was a required text for a class I took in Fall 2015. It greatly facilitated the content of the course, is logically structured, and clearly explains concepts. I highly recommend to anyone interested in French translation.

It is a very good book

According to what I know from other books in translation studies, they remain scarce on details on the translation practice in the now and what to do exactly. Except this one. It seems that they understood this lack of nurturing and that they gathered the how-to's and that they properly assembled a series of chapters and sections that tell what to do regarding what a translator has to do in he now to accomplish his or her work.

No answers to the exercises makes that much of the book useless! What a foolish publisher...

This book is full of errors, hard to understand, and outdated.

Jones' book is a required reading for one of my translation courses at the University of Indianapolis. This is a 300-level French-English translation course that focuses on unraveling semantic and lexical hurdles/nuances in the inter-lingual translation process. My students love the book as it provides them with the nuts and bolts of literary translation theory and practice.
